Referring Provider Map: UAB Medicine

Prepared for Jill Stewart | UAB Medicine | October 2026

As of counts read 2 Oct 2026 from public federal files

UAB Medicine already supports its referring providers through Physician Services, a nurse liaison program that began in 1985, and through MIST around the clock. This page counts the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and hospitals behind those referrals across Alabama, from public federal files, so the question becomes which of them your liaisons reach today.

Primary care physicians in Alabama

4,800

Family medicine, general internal medicine, general practice and general pediatrics.

Nurse practitioners

8,900

About 5,500 list a family, adult, pediatric, gerontology or primary care specialty.

Physician assistants

1,600

Every specialty, primary care included.

Hospitals

90

About 80 acute care, 9 critical access and 3 rural emergency hospitals.

Who refers, group by group

Each group ties to something your own site names: Physician Services, MIST, Ambassador, the ADT notices, the Refer a Patient lines and the Community Network. The groups count different things, so read each number on its own.

Clinicians are counted once each, by the main specialty they list. The roles are typical for each group, not counted. Figures of 100 and up are rounded on purpose.

Primary care physiciansYour ADT page explains that admission, discharge and transfer notices go to a patient's designated primary care physician or practice, and notes that many providers do not have current contact information in that system. The physician, with the practice manager and office staff your liaisons meet.4,800
Nurse practitionersAmbassador is open to NPs as well as MDs and PAs. About 5,500 list a family, adult, pediatric, gerontology or primary care specialty. The rest list acute care, mental health, women's health or another field, and about 1,400 list no specialty. The nurse practitioner, and the physician or practice they work with.8,900

Inside and outside Jefferson County

UAB Hospital sits in Jefferson County. Each cell is rounded on its own, so a row may not add up exactly to its total.

The Jefferson County figures include many of UAB Medicine's own clinicians and its hospitals in the county.

What stands out

Most of these clinicians practice outside Jefferson County.

About three in four primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in Alabama, and about nine in ten of its hospitals, sit outside the county. The Jefferson figures include many of UAB Medicine's own clinicians, so among clinicians outside UAB the share outside the county is likely higher still. That is the ground your liaisons travel.

More nurse practitioners than physicians list a primary care field.

About 5,500 nurse practitioners in Alabama list a family, adult, pediatric, gerontology or primary care specialty, against about 4,800 primary care physicians. A listed specialty is a field of training, not proof of where someone practices. Ambassador is already open to nurse practitioners.

Three Alabama hospitals no longer admit inpatients.

The federal file lists 3 rural emergency hospitals in Alabama. Federal rules bar them from inpatient hospital care and require each to hold a transfer agreement with a level I or level II trauma center, so a patient who needs a bed is transferred. One of the three is in Camden, the member hospital your Community Network page lists there.

Denominators, definitions and sources

  1. Clinicians are individual providers in the federal provider registry, monthly file of July 2026, with an active record and a practice location in Alabama. Each is counted once, by the main specialty they list. A listing shows a registered practice address, not that the clinician is seeing patients today or refers to anyone.
  2. Jefferson County is assigned from the practice ZIP code, to the county holding the largest land share of that ZIP code area in the Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file. Some ZIP codes are not placed by that file, UAB's own campus ZIP code 35294 among them; clinicians there count toward the rest of Alabama, so the Jefferson County figures run slightly low. General internists include hospitalists and physicians in training who list general internal medicine, and UAB's own training programs sit in Jefferson County.
  3. Hospitals are from the federal hospital file, July 2026: acute care, veterans, children's, critical access and rural emergency hospitals. The 9 psychiatric hospitals on the file are left out. Rural emergency hospital rules are 42 CFR 485.502 and 485.538.
  4. Groups, programs and referral lines are as named on uabmedicine.org on 2 Oct 2026. Counts are banded deliberately: under 20 exact, 20 to 99 to the nearest 5, then two significant figures. No count says how many of these clinicians refer to UAB Medicine.

The named version of this page, the practices and hospitals inside a row with the person who holds the relationship at each, is built one row at a time. Reply on the thread, or write to me, Ben, directly: ben@enquirerai.com.
